Helping Students Fight Harassment and Homophobia in Washington State Schools

A national youth-led effort empowering students to be allies against anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bullying, harassment and name-calling in K-12 schools.

The Day of Silence, a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in collaboration with the United States Student Association (USSA), is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT students and their allies.

GLSEN encourages students to organize Transgender Day of Remembrance events that are spaces for discussions about the need to protect students against discrimination and harassment based on gender identity/expression. You can organize various activities, from a candle light vigil, a school assembly, an art installation, or a transgender inclusive school training.

This is an action that recognizes the importance of collaborating with other groups, understanding the roots of organizing in social justice, and working outside or our schools.  This action is a powerful weekend,  bringing the experiences and work of young people in the safer schools movement together with other social justice movements.

Words hurt. More than that, they have the power to make students feel unsafe to the point where they no longer able to perform in school or conduct normal lives. No Name-calling of all kinds and providing schools with the tools and inspiration to launch an on-going dialogue about ways to eliminate bullying in their communities. No Sticks. No Stones. No Dissing.
